Available Woods

Each TravelKate is handmade from hardwoods carefully selected from local sawyers and traditionally finished with hand rubbed tung oil to bring out its natural luster. Standard TravelKates feature the warm reddish glow of American Cherry or the spectacular flecking of quarter sawn White Oak. Special edition TravelKates are also periodically available. These feature Black Walnut, Tiger Maple, Hickory and other species as local supplies allow. Wood is a natural product with random grain patterns and inevitable inconsistencies that make each TravelKate as unique as its owner. I take extraordinary efforts to ensure that each TravelKate is constructed of the finest materials. My goal is to provide you with a lifetime of trouble free operation to compliment your spinning experience, but I cannot ensure that your TravelKate will exactly match what is shown in the images on this web site. If you don’t see what you are looking for here, please contact me for more information or regarding custom work. Recently, I have created unique custom Travel and MiniKates in Wenge and Bubinga. Perhaps you have some well-worn flooring salvaged from your great grandparents’ farmhouse, timber from their barn, or the old tree that shaded your first kiss. Regardless, I strive to accommodate any request. As an example, I recently obtained some large rounds of spalted Silver Maple from a tree that our neighbors removed. Hopefully, these will yield a few interesting Kates in a year or so. Regardless of the material source, I would love to discuss making a truly individual TravelKate just for you. |
