Current TravelKate Status

October 15, 2017
Greetings to all, and thank you for your support over the last year. We have two exciting new TravelKate releases that will be unveiled at Rhinebeck later this week.

For those of you lucky enough to attend the show, please visit Jennifer at Holiday Yarns to see them, booth Booth 15, Bldg 26.

We will also post them to the TravelKate website for direct orders once the show is over.

Thank you all for your interest at Rhinebeck this year. A few Kates did come home, and are back in available inventory. Specifically, we have Walnut, Oak, Cherry and Hickory TravelKates and a pair of Cherry MiniKates ready to ship, with Maple in both models currently in production.

New York Sheep and Wool Festival, Rhinebeck, NY
We have again partnered with Holiday Yarns to offer TravelKates and MiniKates at Rhinebeck. Be sure to swing by and visit Jennifer in Booth 15, Bldg 26.

While all of our current inventory in Jennifer’s booth this weekend, we do have plenty of seasoned wood in the workshop and can get started on your Kate immediately.

Unfortunately, escalating postage and other costs have finally forced my hand on the long-anticipated price increase. Both Oak and Cherry Kates have been bumped up to match the Walnut and Maple editions. I will hold the previous pricing for the remaining stock of Hickory Kates.

As always, feel free to contact me with any questions or comments.

I finally have some good news! After several weeks without production, I am back up and running, and producing TravelKates again. I have wood for all options in stock, and am effectively producing both Travel and MiniKates to order as I try to get caught up on existing and new orders.

With Christmas next week and the backlog, I am projecting new orders will not be shipped until after the first of the year.

September 25, 2015 – Black Friday
Well, I guess it had to happen some day. I went into the workshop today to clean up and look around a bit and realized the computer that runs my mill was off. I hadn’t noticed a power outage, so went over to investigate.

It isn’t good.

The computer appears dead and it looks like it will take a while to get production back up and running again. I will be working on it pretty intensely until that happens, but until I can get the black box breathing again or replaced, TravelKate availability will be severely limited. Please contact me via email before placing an order. At this point I have only a few TravelKates available. Unfortunately, I need to get the computer back up and running before restarting production, so I don’t expect to have any available at Rhinebeck at this point.

The one ray of light is that since I never got around to raising the pricing to accommodate the postage increases, I will hold the current pricing for the remaining stock.

My apologies for any inconvenience.

Sunday, October 19, 2014 – Rhinebeck Afterglow
Thanks so much to everyone who paid a visit to Jennifer and Holiday Yarns at Rhinebeck to pick up a new TravelKate or MiniKate! Do not worry if you couldn’t make Rhinebeck though, as I still have inventory for most options. Drop me a line and let me know what you want. It is very likely that I can pull a kate off the shelf and get it out to you the next day.

On another note, I have undertaken a new business venture over the last few months that has greatly restricted my free time. Because of this, most TravelKate production has effectively become a “Made to Order” situation. I’m doing my best to stay at least a little ahead of orders and maintain a few on the shelf, but sometimes I am a little too tired to get to the workshop in the evenings. There is a bit of a bubble in stock right now, but that hasn’t always been the case. If you have any questions about what is available before you order, or when it might be, don’t hesitate to contact me first.

Now the bad news. Unfortunately, the U.S. Postal Office has gotten very proud of their services of late and the cost of shipping a TravelKate has gotten a bit out of hand over the last year. Because of this I really need to increase the prices a little to cover these additional costs. I don’t want to spring it on you without warning though, so will hold off on the price bump until the end of November. That is six weeks from today. If you want to treat yourself to a TravelKate for Christmas this year, getting your order in sooner than later will reduce stress for both of us and save you a few dollars at the same time.

Friday, Sept. 24

We are very pleased to announce our new MiniKate!

The latest addition to our product line is this new compact version of the original TravelKate. The MiniKate is both significantly smaller and noticeably lighter than its predecessor while retaining most of its functionality. The MiniKate is now in active production and is available to today. See the MiniKate page for more information.

As of Friday November 22 we have available inventory in Black Walnut and White Oak. I also have some TravelKates coming along soon in Hickory and Tiger Maple, as well as a few in Cherry.

If you want to order a TravelKate in time for Christmas, please get your order in as soon as possible. Quantities are limited and I will need to ship by December 18 to ensure your TravelKate arrives by Christmas Eve.

The Black Walnut and Tiger Maple TravelKates are proving quite popular so I stopped by our local hardwood supplier this morning to resupply. Fortunately they had a few pieces of each that I snapped up. They also had some Hickory in stock which I haven’t seen recently. This is an attractive, light-colored wood that is very strong and dense and should be perfect for making TravelKates. I will post some photos later this weekend of this new option. Our next batch should start shipping next week and will include these three woods, as well as quartersawn White Oak and American Cherry.

Rhinebeck 2013
Jennifer Vancalcar of Holiday Yarns has generously offered to make a little TravelKate space in her Rhinebeck booth this year. Thanks Jennifer! You will be able to find Holiday Yarns in Building 26 at Booth 15 throughout the weekend. In the meantime, check out the Holiday Yarns web site and make up your shopping list. Rumor has it she will also be selling JessaLu’s fabulous project bags this year, so be sure to add a bag or two to your purchase when you pick up your TravelKate.

HansenCrafts MiniSpinner
I have had a few requests for a TravelKate that will accommodate the larger WooLee Winder bobbins that are used with the HansenCrafts MiniSpinner. It took a little doing, but I have a new layout for the lids that will do this nicely and still hold four bobbins. Just let me know that you need this capacity when you order. I will then drill your TravelKate lid with the new pattern.

TravelKate in the News!
Thanks to Jillian Moreno for her recent review of the TravelKate in KnittySpin. It is in issue 44, First Fall 2013. Jillian’s review of the TravelKate immediately follows her thoughts on the Hansen MiniSpinner which leads off the spinning section.
