White Oak, Walnut and Cherry TravelKates

White Oak, Walnut and Cherry TravelKates

Why does my TravelKate look different from what I see on your web site?
Much like the fiber of your handspun yarn, wood is a natural product with random grain patterns varying even within a single board. I carefully select each piece of stock based on its own unique character and endeavor to pair bases and lids with similar qualities.

Each TravelKate is constructed of the finest materials and I consistently reject wood that is not up to the highest standards. My goal is to produce a high quality accessory to compliment your spinning experience and provide lifetime of trouble free operation. Use the photos you see here to guide your selection, knowing that your TravelKate will be carefully crafted and unique among all others.

Can I use tension with the TravelKate?
Yes you can. While the TravelKate is designed to allow you to ply without tension, you can tension the bobbins either singly or in pairs if you prefer.

Do I need to use tension with the TravelKate?
No, the TravelKate’s spindle angle is designed to allow you to ply without need for additional tension.

Are bobbins included with the TravelKate?
No, bobbins are not included with the TravelKate. They are included in photos on this site for demonstration purposes only.

Will my bobbins fit?
Most likely, yes. The TravelKate is designed to accommodate up to four bobbins with a maximum diameter of about 3-3/4 inches and a length of 6 inches. The spindles are 1/4-inch brass rod. With the stock TravelKate it is also possible to ply from two bobbins just over 4 inches in diameter at a time, but in this case tensioning is not available as the peg holes are covered. If you are plying from oversize bobbins such as those used with the HansenCrafts miniSpinner/WooLee Winder combination, I can customize your TravelKate to accommodate them at no extra charge. I just need to know you want this option at the time of your order. Please contact me if you have any questions.

I’ve lost a spindle, can I get a new one?
Yes. Replacement spindles, washers and tension pegs are readily available for the TravelKate. Email us at parts@travelkate.com with a list of what you need.

I’ve dropped my TravelKate and damaged part of the lid or base. Can you help me?
Absolutely! Step one is to email me and describe the damage. Photos will definitely help here. I will assess the situation and discuss our options to get you back up and plying as quickly as possible.

Do you maintain TravelKates in stock or is each one custom made?
Each TravelKate is hand made, though not custom for each order. I try to maintain a reasonable inventory at all times, but occasionally orders will get ahead of my production capacity. The latest inventory and production updates are available on the News and Purchase pages. Click either link above. Status is at the top of the News and bottom of the Purchase page so scroll as needed to see the current status.

How quickly can I expect my TravelKate to arrive?
Assuming we have a TravelKate in stock to fulfill your order, we will make every effort to ship it within 48 hours of receiving your order. USPS Priority postage is included in the purchase price, so the transit time should be three days or less, meaning you should receive your TravelKate within five days of placing your order. If something prevents us from fulfilling your order within this time frame, we will email you to let you know when you can expect your TravelKate. This might happen if we are temporarily out of stock in your choice of wood or if we are out of town for a few days. Please check your spam or junk folder if you do not hear from us in a timely manner. We have experienced some trouble with people receiving email from us at gmail or verizon email addresses.

I do not live in United States. Can I still buy a TravelKate or MiniKate?
Yes, you absolutely can! The one issue is that I cannot cover the shipping costs for international orders and will need to invoice you for the difference. Depending upon where you live, this typically means an extra $25 or so. I will contact you once I see your order so we can discuss the surcharges.

I have another question that isn’t covered above. Can you answer it?
Most likely I can. Email me at questions@travelkate.com or as detailed on the Contact Us page and I will get back to you as soon as possible.
